In 1928 he entered Eastbourne School of Art, where he won a gold medal and a scholarship for a study trip to Germany. In the 1930s he did illustrations for books. He also published several art books, of which "How to Draw Aircraft "In 1939 he joined the RAF, where he became a war artist. He painted air war subjects in Europe and at the end of the war in Southeast Asia. He was also a landscape and horse painter.
