Description
Oil, duplicated canvas; 71.5 x 57 cm
An identical depiction of Mary Magdalene, once in the collection of the Dukes of Leuchtenberg in Sweden, appeared at Sothebys auction house in 2006 as a Van Dyck imitator. In 2010, Jan Kosten of RKD attributed it to Jacob van Oost the elder. (born 1601 in Bruges, died 1671 there) - One of Bruges' most important Baroque painters, who occasionally copied works by Van Dyck and Rubens.
Arguably, the two paintings share a common prototype - both are almost identical in size. They differ in the color of the saint's robe and the slightly longer nose. The presented painting is smoother painted.
