Gustav Adolf CLOSS
1864 Stuttgart - 1938 Berlin
German painter, illustrator, herald and entomologist. Son of wood engraver Adolf (1840-1894), nephew of landscape painter Gustav Paulas. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under Ernst Schurth. After a year, he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became a pupil of Wilhelm von Diez. There he began providing illustrations for local magazines. After leaving the Academy in 1891, he returned to Stuttgart, where he illustrated the popular satirical magazine Fliegende Blätter for twenty years. In 1898, he received an award for his collector card designs from the Stollwerck chocolate company. Although most of his income was provided by his illustration work, he considered himself first and foremost a painter. His major works included wall paintings at Schöckingen Castle in Ditzingen and Rapperswil Castle. He also worked on Hellenstein Castle. One of his most famous works was a scene from the life of Roland, created on behalf of Kaiser Wilhelm II. He also created several paintings for King Charles I of Romania and designed stained glass windows,.
