Kazimierz SICHULSKI
1879 Lviv - 1942 Lviv
Educated at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts under J. Mehoffer, L. Wyczółkowski and S. Wyspiański. While still a student, he took an extended trip around Europe - he was in Italy, Paris and Vienna. In 1904, together with F. Pautsch and W. Jarocki, he traveled to the Hutsul region for the first time. Since then, for years, the main theme of his paintings were genre scenes showing the picturesqueness of Hutsul costumes, customs and rituals. After his studies, he lived permanently in Lviv. During World War I, he fought in the Legions and took part in the defense of Lviv. In the interwar period, he taught drawing and painting at the Lviv Industrial School; from 1930 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. His earlier works are characterized by decorativeness, Art Nouveau styling and expressive lines, which faded with time in favor of restless, jagged forms. The artist was also a designer of stained glass, textiles and posters. He was involved in illustration.
