Landscape and genre painter. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. He spent the years1842-45 in Brussels and Antwerp, and exhibited at the Dresden Academy in 1846. He later worked as a teacher. After marrying Helene Korber, he lived in her hometown of Mitava for a year. In 1853 he moved to Tbilisi, passing through St. Petersburg and Moscow on the way. In 1861, he returned to Dusseldorf. He often returned to the Caucasus drawing inspiration for his paintings.
