Nicolaus Tron, Niccolò Tron or Nicolò Tron (1399- 1473) dogeois since 1471. He came from a patrician Venetian family. After a brief career as a merchant, he held various public positions in the Venetian government. He was consigliere for maritime affairs and Venetian ambassador to Pope Pius II. He was married to Aliodea Morosini. In the 1471 election of the doges, he won against his later successors, Pietro Mocenigo and Andrea Vendramin. During his reign, Venice consolidated its control over Cyprus and reduced its frequent disputes with the Turks by entering into an alliance with the Turkic Ussan Hassan Beg. His skillful policies allowed Venice to enjoy a period of freedom. However, his policy of expanding the army sharply increased Venice's public debt.
He reformed Venice's monetary system. He introduced a new coin called the Lira, which depicted the profile of the doge on the reverse.
