Painter, landscape painter. Son of Johann Georg Botha, a tenant farmer. Initially a pupil of Carl Johann Schultz at the Royal School of Fine Arts in Danzig, from 1848 - after receiving a scholarship from - he studied painting and printmaking with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807-1863) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf from 1848-1853. After his studies, he remained in that city. In 1855, he traveled to Paris
