He came from a patriotic Bulgarian family distinguished since the 16th century in the fight for the country's independence. Grandson of a prominent fighter for Bulgaria's independence, journalist and lawyer Ivan Karshovsky. He graduated in 1927 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia in the class of painting under Prof. Ceno Todorov and drawing under Prof. Vasil Zakhariyev. In 1928-34 he studied painting and drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he was a student of Drabik, Bartlomiejczyk, Skoczylas and Pruszkowski. He worked as a stage designer at theaters in Plovdiv, Varna and the National Theater in Sofia. He co-founded the Sofia City Art Gallery and the National Art Gallery, of which he was the first director (1950-1957). He was a lecturer in the poster class at the Sofia Academy of Fine Arts. Founder and long-time secretary of the Association of Bulgarian Painters. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and in the USA (Chicago) , Poland (Warsaw) and Austria (Vienna). After World War II he was vice-chairman of the main board of the Bulgarian-Polish Friendship Society.
The painting was created during the painter's period of study in Warsaw.
